Corporate familiarity and usage of social media is racing far ahead of what many have predicted is the money quote about a new survey of familiarity and use of social media among the top 500 small businesses reported in Inc magazine (that had no involvement with the survey). The rate of adoption of social media is more than double that seen among Fortune 500 companies.
Familiarity with different types of social media ranged from 41% for social network sites to 16% for wikis. Actual use ranged from a low of 11% for podcasting to 27% for social network sites. Most important, 2/3s of respondents to the survey noted that social media plays an important role in their business and marketing strategies.
Good benchmarking index for those of you who work in public and nonprofit agencies and are trying to make the case to add social media to your communications and marketing toolkits.
