One third of all adult US users of the internet have accessed it wirelessly. The prevalence of wireless access through laptop computers, cell phones and wireless-enabled PDAs is the topic of the latest report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project [11 page pdf file].
When compared to all other internet users, wireless connectors are more likely to be male, 18-49 years of age, Black or Hispanic, have a college+ education level and earn over $50K a year.
One quarter (25%) of all US adult internet users say they have a cell phone that connects to the internet with a wireless connection. One in eight (13%) internet users have a PDA that can connect to the internet using a wireless network.
Among internet users under 30 years old, 40% have cell phones that can access the internet and 17% have PDAs that can connect to the internet.
Among 30-49 year olds, 15% have a wireless-enabled PDA that they use.
Just a note to underscore the point that the prevalence of having a cell phone to access the internet is nearly doubled that of PDAs. Unfortunately, the report did not include the data for other age groups though I expect the difference is not as pronounced - yet.
The adoption of mobile technologies that can access the resources of the web is now hovering around the magical 25% number that may signal a tipping point for the entire US adult population.
