The Council for Excellence in Government is launching a social network site for federal workers today. The site is aimed at workers under the age of 35.
In addition to "UnCommentary," the YoungFeds site will feature "ProFile," accounts of young people who are making a mark in government; "Sound Bytes," featuring user-produced podcasts, webcasts and YouTube videos; and "Brand U," a summary of a hot topic in government and what a young person would need to do to take advantage of the trend.
The plan for the site includes allowing users to set up their own blogs, friends' lists, search and calendar functions.
It's not clear what this means for their over-35 colleagues. I'm also curious about what the ad policy will be - Geico is the corporate supporter for the effort and is featured on the home page. What about MySpace-esque corporate and brand 'members?'
Hopefully the links to the site's privacy policy and terms of use will be up soon. This could be a good idea IF the opportunities for targeted advertising and 'education' are understood and protected. After all, this site can quickly become inside the beltway stuff.
Update: And by noon the site was not accessible.
