In my talks about social media I make the point about the misconception people have of who is joining social network sites [I'm taking danah boyd's point about the difference from social networking sites].
Another round of data are in documenting that the most popular social network sites such as MySpace and Facebook are trending towards more older adults being engaged with them.
For example, back in
August of 2005, teens made up a quarter of the MySpace audience. Now
that group represents just 12 percent of users. During the same period,
the middle-aged crowd has been gravitating to the site in droves:
adults 35-54 now make up more than 40 percent of the site, up 8
percentage points in the last year.
The question is whether the growing heterogeneity of MySpace, along with its rapid commercialization, is going to lead to a fracturing of the space into much smaller - and isolated - slivers.
And here is a list of some of the other more notable social network sites you might explore.
