Wikipedia, the inspiration for many wikis that have followed, goes MSM (main stream media) in the New York Times today. The article describes the steps it has taken to provide a level of quality control for its entries - which are open to anyone to contribute to or edit. Of the over 1.2 million entries, as of Friday 261 of them have been temporarily placed on 'protected' or 'semi-protected' status.
The article does note a review of the accuracy of some of Wikipedia's scientific entries conducted by the journal Nature last year. The results were that Wikipedia entries were no more likely to contain inaccuracies than were those in Encyclopaedia Britannica.
Hard to believe that this open source application is now the Web's 3rd most popular source for news and information. Then again, maybe not. Stay tuned for news about social marketing and wikis.
