Alex Steffen talks about an experiment of a colleague and his family to live a car-free lifestyle in Seattle. While it was quite easy to identify a 1 mile perimeter 'walkshed' in which most of their daily activities occur, they identified a need for information tools (such as a map for their walkshed that locates area businesses and public facilities of various sorts) that would help guide their walking behavior. [Guess it beats wandering around aimlessly for at least 30 minutes a day most days of the week.]
