A new study in the American Journal of Managed Care analyzes 1,799 health stories reported during one month of local news broadcasts in the top 50 US markets. Local television news coverage of health care issues often lacks adequate context and in some cases is inaccurate [Daily Health Policy Report and full report-pdf file]. The authors also note that viewers in different markets received different recommendations based on the same health story. And they note that while most weather reports are given by certified meteorologists, no similar credentialing exists for health reporters.
