The Founder and CEO of Technorati, one of the more active players in the blogging world, gave his "State of the Blogosphere" report today. For social marketers and health communicators who are trying to figure out what to do about (with?) this new communication/diffusion technology, here are a few highlights from his report to consider:
- Technorati now tracks over 27.2 Million blogs
- The blogosphere is doubling in size every 5 and a half months
- It is now over 60 times bigger than it was 3 years ago
- On average, a new weblog is created every second of every day
- 13.7 million bloggers are still posting 3 months after their blogs are created
- Technorati tracks about 1.2 Million new blog posts each day, about 50,000 per hour
- Blog Finder has over 850,000 blogs, and over 2,500 popular categories have attracted a critical mass of topical bloggers
Another important feature of blogs to consider, especially for those in public affairs or other positions that require scanning the environment and/or developing responses to current events (think of more traditional media monitoring services), the blogosphere is reactive. Here's some evidence.
BTW - McDonald's was hitting this blog within 24 hours of my posting on their new CSR blog. So if your agency or program isn't including the blogosphere in it's scanning strategy you may be missing a critical information source. And of course, if you aren't figuring out the answer to "what should we do?" about blogs as intervention and communication tools, what are you waiting for? Is it time for someone to convene panels at some conferences to begin talking about it? Somehow, I think doing it on-line will be the proverbial "preaching to the choir."
More news is coming from Technorati this week on the SOTB. Thanks to Steve Rubel (again) for the heads up.
